The Players Studio has classes for children as young as three years old through adult. There is a variety of classes offering instruction in Acting, Singing, and Dancing for all levels of experience. We also offer a variety of workshops to refine your skills.

A group of talented youth ranging from ages 7-17 that audition to be a part of this performing group.  The Players Kids represent The Players Studio at community events, public appearances, and in a staged production.

The Players Follies 

The Players Follies, a 50+ performing troupe, represent The Players Theatre at community events, public appearances, a play reading on The Players Cabaret stage, and in a staged production in April 2016. This troupe is an outlet for performers to gain camaraderie, support, and have the chance to express themselves theatrically.

The Flash Tappers 

The Players Flash Tappers is an advanced adult group, age 18 and up, whose main focus is technique, style, precision and skill. The group will perform at community events, public appearances, and perform dances in our Holiday Revue, Year-End Showcase, The Players Follies show, as well as present their own show in our Backstage Theatre in April 2017.  

 

 

Jolie Schroeder, Director of Operations, joined The Players during the summer of 1996.  Ms. Schroeder is responsible for office operations and procedures for the box office as well as supervising all aspects of The Players Studio, including establishing curriculum, hiring instructors, coordinating community events, and overseeing performance groups.  She is very proud of the accomplishments of The Players Kids, most recently a High Gold Award for their performance of “Freak Flag” from Shrek the Musical.  A Sarasota resident since 1986, Ms Schroeder has 23 years of experience in the operations of performing arts businesses.  school@theplayers.org

Berry Ayers and Jeffery Kin will be holding a very special interactive class that will help perfect both musical and non musical audition materials.   In this class, Berry and Jeffery will share their ‘best practices’ that will allow each attendee get the most out of their 16 bars and one minute monologues.  This is a great brush up for anyone who needs the boost of confidence needed to snag great roles in the theater.   Come prepared to play and learn and share!

Meisner Acting (ages 18-Adult)

This course is open to all actors, regardless of their experience or training. It will give the actor a solid toolbox to build his craft of acting. Adapted from the Meisner Method, the instructor will train the students in acting technique. Students will acquire an approach to the character and the script which will illuminate the nature of the art of acting. It will be a highly enjoyable and collaborative acting class.

Footloose Line Dancing (ages 12-Adult)

For large dance driven musicals like FOOTLOOSE, there are crowd pleasing group dances that are not only great exercise, but just a great deal of fun. This is an exciting group class that will lay out the basics of line dancing with a “Footloose-the musical’ flair that will give you a ‘step up’ on the competition.

Acting SBF (Stronger, Bolder, Fearless) (ages 18-adult)

Being able to bring 100% to each and every role or audition is possible. In one intensive day, you will learn ways to relax, focus nerves and bring more of ourselves to our time onstage. Being fearless, with a “no holds barred” onstage fierceness is possible…with a little coaching. Each student should prepare a memorized one minute monologue as each will be personally coached to bring out the power within.

This course will help students with all aspects of how to write a play. We will approach structure, action, dialogue, character, subject, theme and complexity as dynamics of the drama. Students will have the opportunity to explore the nature of the drama as a blueprint for performance. They will be introduced to the principles of drama and to the process of playwriting.

1-WEEK CAMPS

Ages (5-12)

Superheroes  July 10 – 14                                $150
Capes and masks are all part of this creative storytelling class. Using the power of imagination students can create their own super heroes that save the world through dance, song and scenes.

Broadway Cabaret  July 17 – 21                       $150
Do you like to sing, act and dance? Build your own Broadway revue while learning classic numbers and the latest offerings from The Great White Way.

Pirates & Mermaids  July 24 – 28                     $150
Ahoy matey! Students will have fun acting out scenes and songs from Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan and The Little Mermaid among others.

Star Wars  July 31 – August 4                            $150
Are you a Jedi or Sith? Learn to use the Force through creative dramatics with basic stage combat techniques to stage an epic battle. (Includes a take home a practice light saber.)

Vampires & Zombies  August 7 – 11                  $150
Are you more of a zombie or more of a vampire? Maybe both. Learn to do specialty stage makeup, dance to songs like Thriller and Time Warp, and learn scenes and music from The Addams Family and Phantom of the Opera.

  • Plays should be 1 to 10 minutes in length
  • Max. number of performers needed to produce this play is 8. Playwrights are asked to delineate if there are multiple roles that can be doubled.
  • Manuscripts must be typed and bound, with playwrights’ biographies included.
  • No evaluations will be rendered with an rejected entries.
  • Author may submit a maximum of three scripts.
  • Published plays are not eligible.
  • Musicals are not accepted.

Berry Ayers (Director of Music) credits include performances Off-Broadway and a National Tour of the musical A Chorus Line. Other professional credits include: Titanic, Annie, State Fair, The Full Monty, Footloose, Urinetown, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Anything Goes, Lend Me A Tenor and Avenue Q. His Musical Direction works also include: The Who’s Tommy and Seussical, he choreographed the sell-out performances of A Chorus Line, and directed Carousel & A Christmas Story as well as several revues for The Players Follies.

Steven Vincent (Director of Dance) attended Adelphi University, Garden City, NY, where he received a Major in Dance with a Minor in Dramatic Arts. He partnered on Broadway with Ann Reinking, and toured with Mickey Rooney in George M! Steven has been Director of Dance here for the past 19 years where he enjoys passing on the love of dance. He is director of The Players Kids, and has choreographed several musicals for The Players Theatre, for which he received critical acclaim.

Nancy Creighton recently moved to Sarasota from Milwaukee where she owned her own successful dance studio. She danced, taught and choreographed for her studio’s performance company and 20 years of dance recital performances. Nancy teaches ballet, jazz, tap and musical theatre dance. She trained with Gus and Nan Giordano, Lane Alexander and Jay Fagan. She holds a degree in Physical Education and Dance from the University of WI. Nancy is happy to be teaching with The Players this year.

Cinda Goeken grew up in Central Illinois and earned a B.F.A. in Drama from Illinois Wesleyan University. After a professional career in the field of mental health/rehabilitation for many years, she now devotes her time to participating in theatre as an actor, singer, director, stage manager and as a crew person. She has been teaching acting and singing fundamentals to students on a one-on-one basis for many years, thus bringing with her a breadth and depth of knowledge and experience.

Alyssa Goudy is thrilled to be joining The Players Kids as co-director/choreographer. She has worked with The Players Summer Camps for many years, as well as designed for Players Kids main stage shows and substituted for several classes. She is the Assistant Technical Director for The Players Centre and is frequently Stage Managing and performing for our main stage as well.

Stacey Haught has an extensive background in teaching performing arts with a specialty in On Camera Acting. Before becoming a wife and mother, Stacey was in multiple student films, commercials and voice over projects. She also has done web and print modeling as well as directed two plays with The Players Teens and was Assistant Director for a mainstage play for The Players Theatre.

Logan Junkins is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in Manhattan, New York where he trained in theater dance, voice and acting. Logan is also trained as a character performer and performed for Sesame Place in Langhorne, PA for 3 years. He toured with the USO, and Sesame Street Live before moving to Sarasota where he has starred in many shows. He most recently appeared in La Cage aux Folles for The Players Centre, A Chorus Line and Cats for Manatee Performing Arts Center, and Hair directed by Ben Vereen at the Venice Theater. Logan is currently an intern ballroom dance instructor for Wilsons Dancesport.

Jeffery Kin is a lifelong student of the arts. He enjoys his time on stage, off stage, backstage and in front of the stage. He finds time for this as the Artistic Director at The Players. As an actor, he has performed such roles as Max in Lend Me A Tenor, Guido in Nine, and Zach in A Chorus Line. As a playwright, his plays have been produced in venues across the country and have won numerous awards. Jeffery holds a BFA in Performances from Otterbein University and is a proud supporter of volunteerism and the fine arts.

Debbie McLeod has been a professional actor, singer, director, casting director, producer, and teacher in NY and L.A for over 30 years. In 1996, she founded McLeod Management and has developed, coached and managed many actors into well-known careers, including Kaley Cuoco from CBS’ THE BIG BANG THEORY. Most recently, one of her client’s booked a series regular role on THE MICK, a new Fox series, which will air in 2017. She starred in soap operas for 10 years, over 25 guest star roles in primetime, movies, voice-over, and hundreds of commercials. Debbie holds an MFA in Acting/Directing in Theatre Arts from California State University, Long Beach, and a B.A. in Theatre, Minor in Music, from Florida State University.

Mike McManus attended the famed American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC. While in Manhattan, he studied with many of America’s great dance talents including Henry La Tang, Mary Jane Brown, Charles Kelley, Jerry Ames, and Phil Cook. Mike also had the privilege of taking classes with Patsy Swayze (Patrick Swayze’s mother) in Houston, TX. Mike also works at local retirement centers presenting Steven Vincent’s “Movement Magic” exercise program for seniors. He has taught dance for The Players for over nineteen years.

Marcos Oliveira has been a professional fitness trainer and consulatant since graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education from Maria Thereza Universtiy in Rio de Janeiro Brazil in 1995. He has taught dance and fitness at many of the worlds most prestigious gyms like: Reebok Sports Club, Equinox, and Sports Club LA. He specializes in Latin Dance, Hip Hop, Dance Fusion and Step Dance.

Anna Riccardo graduated from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania in 2004 with a B.S. degree in Business Management and Marketing. While in college, she studied ballet, jazz, creative movement, and acting. She was a dancer with the Emotion Dance Club and also served as choreographer. Anna grew up studying all forms of dance at the Linn McDonald School of Dance in Scranton, PA, where she also served as an assistant teacher. She performed in many full length ballets and participated in a children’s series of shows at the Pocono Playhouse. Since moving to Florida in 2004, she has taught dance in Port Charlotte, Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch.

Tim Schalch attended Temple University in Philadelphia, where he played baseball. He later transferred to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee where he earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing and his master’s degree in sports management. He continued to play baseball while he was a student at Florida A&M, but he picked up another sport after visiting a country music restaurant in 2008 – line dancing. Tim has been a line dance instructor since 2012 and is currently teaching at the White Buffalo Saloon and Plymouth Harbor.

Kay Siebold has been teaching tap dancing for over thirty years. She owned and operated “K’s Dance Schools”. She has performed and choreographed for various dance companies and in Las Vegas reunion shows. Kay studied under numerous dancers, and has had award winning competition students. She has also completed Debbi Dee’s Tap Teach Intensive Workshops. Kay has appeared in The Players productions of Anything Goes, Oklahoma, The Producers, Seussical and 9 to 5.

Louise Stinespring holds three degrees in Theatre: B.A., Smith College;  M.A., Columbia University, Ph.D. in Fine Arts, Texas Tech University. She has a certificate from The Neighborhood Playhouse where she trained to be a professional actor under Sanford Meisner. Louise has taught college theatre courses at colleges on Long Island, NY, Lubbock, TX and here in Sarasota at USF.  As a professional actor in New York City, Louise was a member of Actor’s Equity, SAG and AFTRA.  She has appeared in Off-Off Broadway, Dinner Theatre and Summer Stock productions. She also appeared in national television commercials for such products as Tide laundry detergent.
